LINK Reflection:
My LINK internship was at Animas Surgical Hospital in Durango Colorado. Although this internship was very physically and mentally demanding, I learned a lot. The most important skills that I learned during LINK were definitely people skills. While dealing with patients in the nursing department there were lots of different people with differing personalities. As a nurse it is your job that the patient is informed and happy, and by watching my mentors I learned how to please even the difficult people. The skills I previously had that I think helped me the most were being able to talk to people and asking questions. While getting to take patients' vitals I would get confused easily on which number was for what. But, I asked plenty of questions and talked to my mentors so that I could learn, and by the end I was able to understand. Throughout my internship, there were early mornings and later shifts and it could be really hard for me to stay in a good mood. Being thrown into a workplace in different departments each day was really demanding but it helped me grow and persevere. I have lots of newly grown respect for everyone who works in the hospital because they do so much for us. I believe that by interning at a hospital it will help many other students in the future. I am so grateful for everyone that I got to meet and learn about. This internship has helped me determine that I would like to go into healthcare, specifically nursing and has showed me what work life is like.
My day to day at Animas Surgical Hospital varied a lot because I went to 13 different departments in 15 days. During my time at the hospital I would wear scrubs and have to follow the same rules as any of the other staff. I met lots of amazing people and I felt very welcomed everywhere that I went. Each day was filled with learning about each department and helping with the work wherever I could. I would take notes and observe when we had down time so that I could get the most out of my experience.
For my final project I decided to do the difference between Urgent care and the Emergency room. My last two days at LINK I got to choose where I wanted to go and I chose to go back to ER and Urgent care because those were the most interesting to me. I asked lots of questions about what the differences are and where you should go for different injuries along with lots of research. The final project can be seen above along with photos of me at the hospital.
